The Akamai Imminent Suicide Assessment (AISA) is a significant shift in approach to suicide assessment. While each of the components of AISA has been empirically validated the instrument has not.  Thus, this instrument is not meant to replace the user’s clinical judgement rather than to supplement the user’s information base in deciding who is at imminent risk of dying by suicide.

AISA is designed for both professional and nonprofessionals.  It can be administered while reading verbatim the AISA’s instructions on a smartphone which will lead to a suggested intervention plan (see example below).

A person who may be at imminent risk may not necessarily be exhibiting overt, potentially self-harming, behaviors or even expressing suicidal ideation.  Instead, the potential victim (PV) may just appear to be a bit more anxious, agitated or withdrawn than usual.   Given research that shows PVs may not reveal that they are at imminent risk of dying by suicide, the AISA guides the user to identify key behaviors that are associated with imminent suicide without asking about suicidal ideation.

The AISA is a self-guided assessment, feel free to practice as much as you want.

If your organization would like to gain a deeper understanding of the paradigmatic shift in thinking behind AISA, as well as gain more proficiency in its use, consider obtaining training.

This is what you will learn:
- why you’re wasting your time with the current suicide assessments,
- concepts behind AISA, Suicide Crisis Syndrome,
- practice-training with AISA, and
- tailoring AISA for your organization.
